Obituary

Anthony Tony (GI Eagle) A. Tuma, 72, of Grand Island, NE, made his final delivery to the pearly gates on Thursday, December 20, 2012, from Park Place Nursing Home. Services will be Thursday, December 27, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Richard L. Piontkowski Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in the Belgrade Cemetery with a 2:00 p.m. committal service. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 26, 2012, from 4 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel with a vigil service at 7:00. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Mr. Tuma was born February 9, 1940 at Columbus, NE. He was the son of Anton and Maria (Coufal) Tuma. Survivors of the immediate family include his three sons and daughter-in-laws, James and Carmel Tuma of Central City, Ross and Melody Tuma of Grand Island, NE Shawn and Cindy Tuma of Grand Island, NE One daughter, April Cupples of Clarks, NE One brother-in-law, Randall Roberts of Valparaiso, FL One Sister-in-law, Maneta Kuhlman of Sterling, CO Others left to cherish his memory include his grandchildren, Stephen Tuma, Sarah and Hannah Tuma, Xanadu, Toni Jo, and Dennis Tuma, Amber and Shawn Cupples. A step grandson Carl Berger. Great grandchildren, Steven, Brooklyne, Jacinda, Angel, Danny, Ernie, Jaeda, and Keyliana, and several nieces and nephews. Tony received his education at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Norfolk, NE. After graduating in 1958 he entered the U. S. Army serving until an injury forced his honorable discharge. He returned to Norfolk where he met Evelyn Hambleton. Tony and Evelyn eloped April 7, 1961, in Council Bluffs, IA. They lived a short time in Columbus, NE before making their home in Grand Island, NE. Evelyn died June 20, 1998. Tony was known to many as, GI Eagle due to being a professional truck driver. He drove millions of miles behind the wheel of 18 wheelers. He drove for Coca Cola, Leon Plastics and Chemical, Grand Island Express and was driving for Sunrise Express at the time of his stroke in 1994. Although trucking was his forte he could do whatever needed to be done from branding calves to mending childrens hearts. He was a jack of all trades and a master of one, that being, trucking. He received numerous awards for his safe driving. Tony enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, hunting and Husker football games. He taught his children how to fish and use a gun safely. He enjoyed growing roses and peonies in particular. He enjoyed the outdoors, John Wayne movies, semis, the Union Pacific Railroad, polka music, bald eagles and had a great love of the USA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, four infant sons, his parents, two sisters and a brother-in-law, Florence Roberts, Katherine and Donald Joyce, one brother, Herbert Tuma, one sister-in-law & brother-in-law, James and Donna Hambleton, and one great grandson.
