Andrew W. McGovern, 63, of Grand Island, NE, died Sunday, December 25, 2016, at his home. A memorial service remembering Andy will be held January 14, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel. Seth Cassel will officaite. Inurnment will be in Ft. McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, NE at a later date. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
Andy was born August 10, 1953 to William J. and Mary E. (Brabham) McGovern in Grand Island, NE.
Survivors of the immediate family include his daughter, Amanda Lowery
Step-children, Lance Sharp, Chastity Buhr, Ashley Buhr
Sisters and brothers-in-law, Pamela Joy (Murray) Foreman of Lancaster, PA
Patricia (Dr. Greg) Schafer of Columbus, NE
Brothers, Richard McGovern of Hastings, NE
Thomas McGovern of Omaha, NE
Others left to cherish his memory include numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Andy grew up in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Sr. High School in 1971. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on August 29, 1972, on the buddy plan with his lifelong friend James McElroy. He served at Lackland Air Training Base, Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX, Plattsburg AFB, NY, Clark AFB, Philippines and George AFB, CA, before receiving his honorable discharge on August 22, 1978. He returned to Grand Island and was employed at Nebraskaland Distributing. He married his first wife Sandra in 1979. In 1984 Andy began working for Sterling Distributors Liquor and Wine. In 1985 his life was profoundly changed when two Jehovah's Witness came to his door. He married Kathy Sue on June 6, 1987. He worked for Hastings Hearing Aid Centers from 1987 until retiring in 2001 because of a disability.
Andy enjoyed fishing and had a love of horses.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, William F. and Mary (Gordon) Brabham, Andrew and Elsie (Dunn) McGovern.
Memorials are suggested to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness in Andy's name.
