Obituary

Alvin H. Reimers, 93, of Grand Island, NE, died peacefully, at the V. A. Medical Center, Saturday, May 17, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Mass of the Christian Burial will be Thursday, May 22, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Todd K. Philipsen will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, with military honors provided by the United Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Army Honor Team. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 21, 2014, from 4 7 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. To honor Alvins memory the family requests that you wear your cowboy hat and boots. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Alvin was born April 6, 1921, at Dannebrog, NE. He was the son of Thomas Henry and Nellie Edna (Wilson) Reimers. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife of 66 years, Rosetta Reimers of Grand Island, NE Daughters and sons-in-law, Suzi Petersen of Loveland, CO Shirley and David Bruner of Fremont, NE Elizabeth and Ken Peyton of Grand Island, NE Carol and Gene OGorman Backhaus of Denver, CO Patricia and Jeff Fulton of Grand Island, NE Lizetta and Jerry Archer of Franklin, NE Sons and daughter-in-law, Tim Reimers of Grand Island, NE Jamie and Deb Reimers of Omaha, NE Sister, Jessie Kiser of Dannebrog, NE Brother-in-law, Arnold Kyhn of Boelus, NE Others left to cherish his memory include his 18 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Alvin attended country school in Dannebrog completing the eighth grade; he later earned his GED, and received college credits. He entered the U. S. Army on April 18, 1945, at Ft. Leavenworth, KS serving until his honorable discharge on December 20, 1946. He married Rosetta Wissing on September 24, 1947, at St. Libory, NE. He worked for various cattle feeders in the area and settled in Grand Island. He later proudly maintained and cared for Blessed Sacrament Church. He enjoyed being with his family, fishing, hunting, volunteering at the church, singing in the choir, his days as an auctioneer, playing cards and being a handyman for whoever needed his help. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, he was an usher there and a long time member of its parish choir. He was active in the Knights of Columbus, was Grand Knight, 94-95, received Top Proposer Award, and the City of Grand Island Knight of the Year in 2006. He is welcomed into heaven by his parents, three sisters and three brothers. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church or the Knights of Columbus.
