Obituary

Alex McMillan 95 GRAND ISLAND – Alex Clifton McMillan, 95, of Grand Island, formerly of Minden, passed into the waiting arms of his Father, on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, at the Country House Residence in Grand Island. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. Concelebrants will be Fr. James Benton and Fr. Marty Egging. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery with graveside military honors by the United States Air Force and the United Veterans Color Guard of Grand Island. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel, with a 6 p.m. vigil service. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Alex was born on April 24, 1921, in Herrin, Illinois, the son of Hallie and Margaret (King) McMillan. Alex was a Veteran of four wars (World War II, Korean, Cold War and Vietnam). He proudly served his country, retiring after 30 years in the United States Air Force, where he achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. During WWII he was in the Pacific Theatre and was at Guadalcanal. He spent most of his military career as a flight engineer with SAC and MAC traveling the world. After retirement, Alex received a Machinist Degree from Trident Technical College in North Charleston, SC. He had many adventures in his lifetime. Alex served in the Conservation Corps Camp until he enlisted into the Army Air Corp. After WWII he met and married Dorothy Keck in 1946 in Grand Island. To this union six children were born. Dorothy passed away in 1957. Alex later married Lydia Eisenach in 1961. Lydia passed away in 1998. On Jan. 2, 2008, Alex was united in marriage to Joanne (Robertson) Baacke. Alex is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 9 blessed years, Joanne of Grand Island; four of his children and spouses, Barbara and Barry Rosenberg of Boynton Beach, FL, Michael and Jane McMillan of Aurora, CO, Mary McMillan and Dorothy and Joseph Vail, all of Fayetteville, GA; eleven grandchildren, Tricia Mikhail, Dustin McMillan, Brandyn Calcagno and Nathan McMillan, Michael Smith (Angela) and Matthew Smith, David, Rebecca and Daniel McMillan, Elizabeth Vail and Emily Martinez; 13 great grandchildren; sister, Betty Bell; daughter-in-law, Pam McMillan; four sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; one step-daughter and two step-sons; nieces and nephews. In addition to his two wives, he was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Shellie Smith and son, Patrick McMillan; brothers, Harold and Robert McMillan; four brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law. Family members serving as pallbearers for Alex are: son – Michael McMillan (former Major in USAF), grandson – Michael Smith (former Army & veteran of Operation Desert Storm), grandson – David McMillan (former Marine), grandson – Daniel McMillan (former Marine), son-in-law, Joseph Vail, and grandson-in-law – Frank Martinez (former Army & veteran of Iraqi Freedom). The family would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to all whose prayers, loving kindness and care was so freely gifted... we are truly blessed.
